Informative speech - The World of Facebook (Transcript)
Have you ever poked a friend during class who is in a completely different building from him, how about broken up with someone in front of 500 people. These situations and more are possible in the world that is Facebook.
Facebook is a social network website that has taken the college world and now the rest of the world by storm still how does it fit into the busy lifestyle that college students have, how does it affect them. I myself an avid facebook user and wanted to know if this was a bad influence or not. Through my research and what I'm sharing today, I have found how college students use facebook in their daily lives and how affects them academically.
Students use facebook for many different reasons, some are more commons than others, one reason is to keep in touch with friends. According to the study on a quote benefits of facebook 96% of students who had a facebook profile put their high school information in it, they said to keep in touch with their old friends and qoute it was a strong motivation for opening a facebook account in the first place.
Another reason students use facebook is to keep track of things with 500 plus friends, it's really hard to remember birthdays, parties, protests, you name it. Facebook helps with that. And event page can be created for everything by anyone. Say you wanted to go to a party but didn't really want to show up alone, you can go the event page and see who is attending and get in contact with them. Problem solved. Gaming on Facebook has become rapidly popular, according to the website of the farmville applications which in case you don't know, farmville is you can have a virtual farm where you grow crops and raise livestock and accord to the website it's the most popular application on Facebook to this day with over 62 million registered users, still probably the most common use of facebook and the most time-consuming is to see what friends were doing, what they've been up to or if you've just met someone at a party and want to know more about them without actually talking to them, all you need is a name and relatively what they look like and you can find their profile on Facebook, a common term for this is Facebook creeping and it's most prevalent in students who use Facebook daily. according to the benefits of Facebook study 94% of the students surveyed had a Facebook account and of these students 100% said they use Facebook on daily basis for an average of 10 to 30 minutes each visit, it doesn't sound like a lot of time but how does it impact us when we have a busy lifestyle of a college student. No surprise students who use Facebook instead of studying for that test have impacted grades. According to the study done at University of Harrisburg Science and Technology, students who use Facebook have an average full letter grade lower than those who don't. The students were also observed to be more distracted with Facebook and unable to finish their other tasks. It's very easy nowadays when technology is so important in schoolwork and you're in the computer all the time to just open up another web browser and have your profile picture right there, seeing if anyone comments on it. The other half of this study involved taking students away from Facebook and see how it reacted, the students acted legitimately addicted to something. According to a professor who conducted the study, they sneak peeks on the profile through their cell phones when people weren't looking. Still after the internet was disabled on the phones and the website was blocked on the computers, students didn't notice the difference after just a few days the students in this study said they became more believed eased. Same amount of schoolwork, same job, same social just no Facebook. Wow that's crazy right. Ok no more Facebook, it's a bad influence well not according to everybody. Based on a study done at the Northeastern University 2009, Facebook didn't have any impact on grades, ethnic background, gender and parental influence had more impact on GPA than any kind of Facebook activity. There was one poll where Facebook was a factor. Parents with different levels of education, in this pools however students who use Facebook had a higher GPA than those who didn't. It was observed that these students had better internet technology skills but they use toward their other schoolwork, the students use Facebook also seem to have more active social life than those who didn't use Facebook. When one student was questioned then the study about this instead quote it's a easier to get in touch with people when we're all talking on the same website.
So based on the information Facebook doesn't seem to turn you into a scholar but it does seem to help in other aspects. It may be addicting but it can introduce you to other people and ideas, it's all depends on how the students manages their time, how important it is to view that new photo album that came up on your friends page or finish the paper you have to write. Is Facebook factor in making this generation more technology savvy and personal sure it is, is that bad? Who knows ? All I know is I haven't been on Facebook all morning getting ready for this speech and I assure I'll be going on right when I get home
